In a cunning move Obama has picked Merrick Garland to be his SCOTUS pick. Unlike Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, Merrick Garland is not very left leaning he is considered a moderate Judge and has fans on both sides of the aisle. In a sense Obama is calling the Senate’s bluff as they have claimed that they would not consider any nomination from Obama despite being constitutionally held to do so. They wont get a better pick. If Sanders or Clinton get into office then the nominee’s will surely be far more left leaning and could destroy what is left of the crumbling Republican party.

Merrick Garland has been nominated before so he has been previously vetted by sitting members of Congress. If they refuse to see him now their past praise of Garland will comeback to haunt them. Garland is something of a hero in DC; He was one of the first on the scene with the Oklahoma City bombing and helped to build the case against Timothy McVeigh. Garland is 63 which would make him a bit older than the average choice for a new SCOTUS justice, but again it is all part of Obamas chess game with congress.
