The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin was born March 25th 1942 in Memphis Tennessee. Her father was a successful preacher and known as the man with the Million Dollar Voice. Aretha grew up singing in her fathers church and traveling with him. Due to her father’s fame she met some impressive people during her childhood, Martin Luther King, Sam Cooke, and Jackie Wilson among them.

At the age of 18 she wished to move out of gospel and into popular music like Same Cooke had. She signed with Columbia records. Aretha’s time at Columbia was profitable to her but they did not explore the depth of her voice so in 1967 She signed with Atlantic records.

1st Woman to have 100 songs on the Billboard R&B charts

Atlantic seemed to be a better hit and she landed her first #1 hit with “I’ve never Loved a Man (the way I love you). The B side of that single also hit #1 “Do Right Woman Do Right Man” Grammys and awards piled up and in 1968 she made the cover of Time magazine.

From Time to the Blues Brothers it’s all Aretha

Aretha has had struggles on her way, two failed marriages, health problems, smoking, and struggles with her weight. But, today she is still with us and doing great, so, Happy Birthday Aretha!
