As everybody knows Independence day is celebrated every year on the 5th of July with parades, fireworks and barbecues. Yes, the 5th!

On July 5, 1811 seven of the ten Venezuelan Provinces rebelled against the rule of European Colonialism. Three others remained loyal to Spain. The Congress of Venezuela justified defying the Crown of Spain based on the premises of equality of individuals, abolition of censorship and dedication to freedom of expression. And they documented these “rights” in what is known as “The Declaration of Independence.

Venezuela was the first of the South American Republics to formally break away from Spain. What followed was nearly 10 years of War between “Patriots” and “Loyalists”. Unspeakable atrocities were committed by both sides. Even going so far as both sides pledging to take no prisoners and to kill women and children alike.

After many great battles, heroic acts and a whole slew of epic characters the “Patriots” won and in 1821 Venezuelan won it’s independence. It’s too good of a story to explain in 151 words. Like nothing that they ever taught you in History 101. Totally unique to the Human Story. I can only hope that your will research it yourself.

Happy 5th! Ole!
