The 2016 Emmy nominations are out and looking at the list shows it was another very good year for TV. While television was long considered a lesser art than cinema, I would dare to say that it has ventured beyond. Not that it is all good. There are still plenty of shit things being produced, but with selective watching there is enough quality TV to feast upon.
For the full list of nominees go here. Picking the top Drama of the year is tough. My gut says go with Game of Thrones, but, I think Better Call Saul had a more satisfying season while GOT gave us only 3 great episodes out of 10. Mr. Robot would be a nice underdog pick.
Best comedy? HBO’s Veep and Silicon Valley are top contenders, but my pick goes to Transparent for continuing to break new ground in its second season. Caitlyn Jenner will be in the 3rd season, so it could be the end for that show.
Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) gets my vote for best actor in a drama, although Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) deserves a nod here. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) deserves to win one for actress as she has already lost to Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) last year. Robin Wright (House of Cards) is basically just playing Hillary.
Comedy actor and actress? I would like to see Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) get it this time. Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) won last year, so it will probably go to Anthony Anderson (black-ish) as it has been a difficult year for black men. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) deserves it, but I know in my heart they are going to give it to Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie).
