I ran a social experiment this week and promoted a 3rd party vote in a discussion with 3 men at a local bar. All 3 were middle class and white. All were in their 30’s. And all are Dems who have decided to vote for Clinton.

During our conversation I was told the following:

Ralph Nader voters were responsible for the Iraq War. If I vote 3rd party I will do so knowing it means the countless deaths of innocents in other countries.

“That argument is pure hogwash.”

Voting my conscience is not as important as defeating Trump. There are more important things than an individual’s conscience.

“That argument runs counter to a free thinking society.”

You won’t suffer the way others under Trump will, which makes your vote selfish and a mark of your privilege.

“Apparently all 3 of them were blind to my femaleness and in denial of our country’s inherent sexist attitudes?”

Of all the elections to vote 3rd party, why this election.

“Oh, you know, just to be an asshat?!”

Modern American Thought

I understand why the pro-Clinton voters would make such arguments. They have every reason to fear Trump. I quake at the thought too. And I was willing to continue our debate until one of them told me the following:

This election is real. Real people will be affected. You need to understand that.

“..and you need to understand that I am leaving this conversation now. I have to go hang out with my imaginary friends!”
