Like any great leader, Donald Trump wants to build a wall.
There’s already a wall between America and Mexico, but it’s not a very good one. Donald, being the greatest at everything, wants to build a big, shiny, magical wall. And why not? His neighbor is footing the bill.
Is Donald on to something? Let’s look at some other country sized walls throughout history to find an answer.
The Great Wall(s) of China
Actually a series of walls (4500km) built over the space of 1000 years the Great Wall(s) of China’s main purpose was to keep Mongols and other undesirables out of the country
Did it work? Yes, China is still there relatively Mongol free.
The Maginot Line
Fearing an imminent invasion from Northern neighbor Germany the French constructed an elaborate series of bunkers, guard towers and other fortifications strategically placed along their border known as the Maginot Line.
Did it work? No, The Germans went around through Belgium.
Built so as not to have Emperor Hadrian’s visit to England disturbed by rapist and drug dealers from Scotland, Hadrian’s Wall stretched approximately 80 miles long from the North Sea to the Irish Sea.
Did it work? It kind of did, although there were not real recorded attempts to step over it. These days though in London you can’t swing an Irishman by the tail without hitting a Scotsman and 17 Arabs. So in the long run it wasn’t that effective.
