I’ve got a few friends who consider themselves “hardcore” Libertarians. When I say hardcore I mean Jefferson (N. Calif) Liberty, no Guv’ment, Gun from dead cold finger kind of Libertarian.
My Commie-Socialist arguments about the origin of their sewer systems, water purification plants and snow plows fall on their deaf ears.
I don’t blame their sentiments. America government is the stooge of big business and Washington DC is a Roach Motel™ for tax dollars. “Taxes check in, but they don’t check out!” It’s hard to push a “Daring-Sharing-Caring Society” when times are so cold.
Then I discovered the Valhalla of “Freedom” right in our backyard.
Slab City, or “The Slabs” if you’re groovy, is a campsite inhabited by RVs, drifters, loners and squatters. About 150 “citizens” live here year round. But in the Winter months the population can soar into the thousands as campers use the site before the weather turns too hot. There is no running water, police, traffic lights, city taxes, electricity, sewers or toilets and no trash pick up services. You can smell the True, American Freedom. Literally smell it!
It’s not entirely “Free”. Some of the residence still collect a Gub’ment commie socialist handout like SSI, Social Security or Disability Payouts. But beyond that it’s as close to True American Borderland-esque Freedom that one could hope for.
Slab City is founded on the remains of Camp Dunlap, a former World War II base which was given back to the state in 1961. The state still owns and controls the land, but leaves the Slabbers alone. For now.
Here’s a good business idea. Start a vacation service to all would-be “Liberty and Freedom” types. They can leave the oppression of their daily lives to spend a Summer vacation experiencing what liberty, self reliance and lack of social support feel like. Judging by the Facebook posts on my timeline, the size of the my target audience is huge. Slab City could become the new Las Vegas.
Maybe, If they like it so much that they won’t come back to serve their Slave Master Obama. But I won’t be holding my breath.
